Stem Cells & Turn Coat Republicans

I’m too tired to do a proper blog entry, so here’s an email I sent to some friends:

NRLC has a great website at: http://www.capwiz.com/nrlc/issues/ that keeps you up to date on the latest legislation. If you type in your zip code, it will show you the contact information for your representatives, bills that are of immediate concern, and will even let you generate automatic letters to send by email or to print off and mail.

I’ve been generating letters and editing them somewhat and faxing them in to my congress persons to give it a little more personal look but you can just click and send the emails, apparently they have some impact.

Besides the effort to end the judicial filibustering, there are important bills coming up for consideration, including one on stem-cell research which is close to being passed by both houses and may force Bush into deciding whether or not to veto it. He’s going to come under heavy pressure if he is faced with that choice. Hatch (the turncoat!) is a big sponsor of the stem cell research. From today’s article in The Wall Street Journal entitled “Stem-Cell Bill Poses A Quandary for Bush”:

“Supporters of looser restrictions on stem-cell research say they are confident they have the 218 votes necessary to pass legislation that would allow taxpayer dollars to be used for research on embryos that are just a few days old, stored in fertility-clinic freezers and donated by couples who don’t need them.”
Here’s the contact info for the White House to urge Bush to veto any such legislation.
Here’s a good website on the ethics of stemcell research and background:

Here’s a good article from Dave Andrusko

“.. as we have documented dozens and dozens of times, the truth resides in this 21-word-long sentence found in Tumulty’s otherwise completely fawning tribute to the alleged curative powers of embryonic stem cells: ” Foes say they also plan to point out that embryonic-stem-cell research has yet to produce a cure for anything.” Ah, yes.”
